GUEST NIGHT
JEZ LOWE

We welcome Jez Lowe for a return visit to our club.

For the last thirty years, singer and songwriter Jez Lowe has taken his songs of life in his native North East England to audiences across the world . He is one of the most hard-working and popular acoustic/folk artists of the present day.

His latest album, his 15th, entitled “Wotcheor!”, has once more thrust him into the spotlight, with a successful series of stage shows, and a fistful of outstanding reviews, and a renewed interest in his brand of pointed, poignant and powerful musical epistles from the North, that have brought him a nomination for Folksinger of the Year in the BBC Folk Awards, an “album of the year” award in the US-based Inde-Acoustic Awards, and a Sony Radio Award for his contribution to the prestigious Radio Ballads series for the BBC, over the last five years alone.

As well as his own performances and tours around the globe, featuring Jez accompanying himself on guitar, cittern, mandolin and harmonica, Jez’s songs also travel independently, thanks to cover versions by the likes of Fairport Convention, The Dubliners, Cherish The Ladies, The Tannahill Weavers, The McCalmans, Bob Fox, The Black Family, The Clancys and scores more folk acts around the world.

Here below is the YouTube clip of Jez Lowe singing 'Golden Vanity'.

EASTER SUNDAY SPECIAL CONCERT

Maddy Prior has a history of collaborating with unexpected musicians. Looking to approach traditional and written material from interesting and varied perspectives. This occasion sees her team up with Giles Lewin, a multi-talented instrumentalist and singer with a classical background diluted by some years in the band After Hours. He is a stalwart of the Carnvial Band, another long-time collaboration of Maddy’s. Hannah James, who is now a part of Lady Maisry, and has been in the Demon Barbers and Kerfuffle, will join them. She brings singing, accordion, clog dancing and youth.

Supported by

FAKE THACKRAY

"Jake Thackray's songs are funny, poignant, witty, tricky, romantic and wise. They are also very hard to perform. John Watterson has made a proper tribute to this unique British song writer, taking great care to replicate Jake's phrasing and emphasis and to play guitar in Jake's style too. John brings these wonderful songs to a new public who will no doubt love them as much as Jake's old fans. It is marvellous that Jake Thackray's treasured songs ride again. They are in safe hands." - Ralph McTell

GUEST NIGHT
MARIE LITTLE

Marie Little is an acclaimed performer, drawing her extensive repertoire from many genres, including Folk, Country and Music Hall.

Her songs can be sad or thought-provoking one minute, and have you howling with laughter the next.

She has a natural ability for knowing when to 'lift' her audience, and her warm personality and natural Northern wit add to her charm.

This, combined with a tremendous talent, makes her an entertainer of the highest order, held in affection by her fans.

Jez Lowe writes this about Marie: "Most singers feel it important to include a high measure of 'topical' songs that show some social conscience. This has always been the case with singers like Marie, and yet it is obvious to her that entertainment is the name of the game. Hence her repertoire of songs veers through cotton songs, mining songs, music hall, country and pop songs, and judging by her popularity it is a winning combination, yet she manages to stamp her style on each song with ease"

Here below is the YouTube clip of Marie Little singing Harry Chapin's 'Flowers are Red'.

GUEST NIGHT
STEVE DONNELLY

Steve Donnelly has been an occasional visitor to our club on singaround nights, and after requests by several of our club members, we have invited Steve to come and be our guest performer. Steve is a singer/songwriter/guitarist and has quite a repertoire of both self-penned and traditional songs. He will be dipping into this repertoire to give us some Irish songs in honour of St Patrick's Day!

He is bringing with him, Marion Wilson (a fine singer who runs the Lamb Sessions in Andover) ans Steve Forster (an excellent harmonica player), who will be accompanying him on several of his numbers.

Come prepared to exercise your own vocal chords, as there's nothing Steve likes better than to lead a rousing chorus song!

Here below is the YouTube clip of Steve Donnelly singing his own composition 'Keeping The Old Songs Alive'.

BELSHAZZAR'S FEAST

In 1995 Paul Hutchinson (accordion) and Paul Sartin (oboe, violin and vocals) shared a musical passion borne out of the desire to earn sufficient money to support their extravagant lifestyles. Their amazing musicianship has stunned audiences around Europe and the States. If you like Mozart, Beethoven, Elvis Presley and The Spinners avoid them – you have been warned!

Belshazzar’s Feast start with traditional folk music, add a touch of classical and jazz, throw in a bit of pop and music hall, and top it off with wry humour for a unique live experience. They received a coveted nomination for the Best Duo Award at the 2010 BBC Folk Awards.

The two Pauls are no strangers to this club, having been our Christmas Guests on more than one occasion! Once seen and heard – never forgotten! They are back this year by popular demand!

“Not a small hairy mongrel, not a respected record label or a multinational enterprise but a remarkable trio of musicians that will delight and entertain you. Despite the absence of Les Barker his strange imagination still soars to musical heights through the stunning voices of Alison Younger and Hilary Spencer and the keyboard wizardry of Chris Harvey.

Alison, Hilary and Chris musically recreate the weird and wonderful world of the internationally acclaimed poet, philosopher, photographer and fruitcake and continue to perform the marvellous nonsense that is MRS ACKROYD.

Funny, witty, thoughtful, emotional - but always brilliant!” - Cleckheaton Folk Festival

"DYLANFEST" with THE ZIMMERMEN
(George Wilson & Jeff Henry)

Click on Button for details of the evening.

Zimmermen are those two locally well known folk characters, Jeff Henry and George Wilson.

Jeff Henry has appeared in various folk incarnations over the last three decades - in the popular 70s and 80s Southampton-based group, Cat's Whiskers (with Brian Hooper, Annette Costello and later with the inclusion of Tony Fry); with Brian Hooper in Hooper & Henry, a collaboration which resulted in their show, "Southampton in Song" (also available as a CD) and latterly as a duo with Sandi O'Donnell. Not least he is also a popular solo performer who has recently found his forte in the writing of some superb songs such as 'Dancing With You'.

Jeff's latest venture is as one of the three local songriters (together with Brian Hooper and Barry Wake) to have written "Look Out!", a song-suite of 18 songs that tells the story of the Titanic mainly through the perspective of Fred Fleet (the Titanic's look-out) who was one of the survivors.

When George Wilson, a geordie, was eventually "de-commissioned" and parted company from EIIR, he decided to settle in Southampton, and the folk scene has been the richer for it. He too has appeared in numerous folk incarnations over the last two decades - with Geoff Higginsbottom in the Phatt B'stards; with Paul Openshaw in Take The Shilling; with Keith Holloway in Blo Na Gael; and with his delightful girls Jenny & Kaite to name but a few, and not forgetting his considerable talent as a solo artist. He has also been a club organiser and a larger-than-life festival compere of several major festivals.

One New Year's Eve, after an evening's festivities, and liberally libated, they discovered that they had a mutual love of the music of one Robert Zimmerman - out came their guitars, and they started working their way through RZ's vast repertoire - and everyone around went silent - it was as if these two had been playing together for years!

The rest, as they say, is history, and by popular request they are appearing again, and you can have the undoubted pleasure of sharing in that experience, as Zimmermen present a tribute to Bob Dylan.

NORTH DRIVE

NORTH DRIVE is a brand new band with strong vocal harmonies and two great lead vocals. Two members of the band are writing original songs, and the material ranges from ballads to straight ahead Bluegrass. Sally fronts the band and provides an exciting lead vocal, placing her amongst the best of British Bluegrass. Rick’s distinctive vocals and flat picking is also the trade mark of the Southampton based Contraband. The Czech Republic has provided many great musicians and Michael, a talented multi-instrumentalist, is following in the tradition. Martin has a wealth of musical experience and brings a fresh look to the band’s arrangements – he also plays a number of different instruments but has been placed in charge of all things below 250Hz!  Richard can be found with Home Territory and more recently DalebillyNorth Drive plan to record their first album by the end of the year.

THORN & ROSES

Thorn & Roses are Rowena Metters, Sylvia Fletcher, and Jinks Jenkin, who joined voices a number of years ago inspired by their mutual love of unaccompanied close harmony singing. They are all accomplished singers in their own right, but since forming Thorn & Roses have developed a style and presentation that has gained them quite a following in this country.

People in this area will know them from their hugely popular performances at Bournemouth’s Voice Tour which is attended annually by a double digit representation from members of our folk club.

Row and Sylv, both well-known and respected singers from Wadebridge in North Cornwall, have been singing together since the mid sixties, and between them have a vast repertoire ranging from the true traditional through to recent popular hits. Both coming from singing family backgrounds, they have won numerous song competitions over the years, latterly representing Cornwall at international Celtic Festivals.

Jinks' initial interest in folk singing also started during the sixties revival period, only to be curtailed by a move to male voice choir singing for some years during which he performed throughout the country including London's Royal Albert Hall. He then moved on to become a founder member of the "Rum and Shrub" shanty group, performing in maritime festivals throughout the UK and Europe, and latterly the USA. His other incarnations have included “Jink’s Stack”, a group famed for its close harmonies and boisterous presentation and “Hunter’s Moon”.

The unusual blend of voices that is the signature of Thorn and Roses is captivating with an occasional surprise when Row and Jinks swap parts, (musical ones that is) to allow Jinks to take the lead. They are equally at home in any location, but prefer a venue where they are amongst the audience where a rapport will inevitably develop between themselves and the assembly. Their powerful yet sensitive approach to their performance has led to many requests and has moved some audience members to tears.

ANTHONY JOHN CLARKE

There are very few places in the UK and Ireland that Anthony John Clarke has not played. His supporters are loyal and many, and the tributes he receives from his peers bear witness to the talent and hard work of one of the folk scene's nicest guys. He retains his reputation as one of the top songwriters on the scene and his hard work and dedication to his craft are a credit to him. For him, songwriting is indeed a craft.

His shows are funny, challenging and extremely popular. Anthony John Clarke is one of the music scene's real gentlemen.

"People don't leave the house to be bored to death. You have a responsibility to entertain and avoid being self-indulgent. I avoid being professionally Irish as much as I can. Just because I'm an Irish songwriter doesn't mean I can't love the Kinks and the Small Faces, Wes Montgomery, Coldplay. I like the songs of George Formby. They were my first delight musically and I liked listening to them with my children as they were growing up."

JOHN KIRKPATRICK

From the late 1960s, John Kirkpatrick has been at the very forefront of innovative folk in Britain, and has played with, among others, the Albion Band, the Albion Country Band, Steeleye Span, the Richard Thompson Band, Brass Monkey, and Band of Hope, as well as establishing himself as a brilliant solo act. It is a pedigree second to none.

Whatever the musical context, John has gained wide acclaim not only for his virtuosity and musicianship, but also for the essentially English quality of the sound that characterises all his work. 'Concertina & Squeezebox' magazine in the USA has said of John that he "has certainly had more influence upon English diatonic reed playing than anyone of his generation."

A John Kirkpatrick gig guarantees an evening of variety and entertainment of the highest quality. Folkworks said of him, "one of the major figures of the English folk scene, John is much acclaimed as a musician, composer, singer, songwriter... in fact, he could be called the Renaissance Man of folk music." Who are we to disagree?

11 A Spotlight On....
BOXTY
&
CARL DANBY

Boxty are an Irish family band from County Waterford consisting of Eamon Duffin on guitar and vocals, wife Diane on bodhran and son Jimmy on squeeze box.  We did try to book them for a guest evening but they have been gigging in Ireland about 7 times a week during the season (which has just come to an end) and they are now taking a well-deserved holiday visiting family in Hampshire (and looking forward to the break!).  However, they did agree to perform some music for us on an informal basis – so we have slotted them in on a ‘Spotlight on...’ night. (Boxty did actually guest at the club many years ago when we met at the Obelisk in Woolston and some of you may remember Eamon from when he came on his own earlier this year and did a couple of floorspots.)

Some of you old ‘uns  will remember Carl Danby who was a regular at the club for many years until he ‘emigrated’ to Jersey around 1996. He still pops back home at fairly regular intervals,  and this time he and Peg have timed their visit to coincide with the visit of the Duffin family who are old friends. Indeed, if I remember rightly, nearly two score years ago,  Eamon and Carl accompanied Ken Stephens in the local popular trio Solent Breezes ,which won first prize in Poland as Best Folk Act! (We laughed because the first prize was a contract for a regular spot on Russian TV – which obviously they were unable to accept. So they agreed to swap it for the second prize which was a rather large cash prize. However, they later learned that they were unable to take the money out of the country! They also had to be careful about what they brought out through customs. So, apart from a few new instruments..... but they did have one hell of a holiday!!)  Memories! More recently (but still some years ago) Carl was in a duo with Pam Webber. Now this singer/guitarist performs in a session band in Jersey (and also in the Jersey Big Band) and you will see him around at festivals and clubs doing solo floorspots.

COLUM SANDS

Together with his siblings Tommy, Ben and Anne, Colum is a member of the internationally renowned Sands Family from County Down, the recipients of an award for Best Irish Folk Band.  Colum has appeared on stage, both with the family band and as a solo performer, in over 30 countries around the world and in large, prestigious venues like New York’s Carnegie Hall to small, intimate folk clubs.

His first solo album arrived in 1981 and soon he found that his songs were being covered by the likes of Billy Connolly , Maddy Prior and June Tabor. His second album inspired a special BBC television documentary. As he travelled the globe in his solo career he soon discovered that many of his songs had arrived before him via such artists as Andy Irvine, Tommy Makem, Liam Clancy and Roy Bailey, to name but a few, all of whom had recorded his songs.

Colum is not only a writer, composer, singer, guitarist and storyteller, but he is also a presenter for BBC Radio Ulster. His folk programme is broadcast in prime time between 2000hrs and 2200hrs every Saturday night (the programme can be listened to ‘live’ via his website). He has also broadcast a series of programmes for BBC Radio 2 and his work on radio and in the studio earned him the Living Tradition Award for services to Folk and Traditional Music. His first book, "Between the Earth and the Sky", like his stage performances, contains a combination of songs and stories.  In 2001 Colum joined Israeli storyteller Sharon Aviv for a tour of Israel, including a concert at the country’s first integrated school for Jews and Arabs.

Many of Colum’s captivating anecdotes are drawn from his extensive world travels and a lot of laughter is involved in the re-telling because Colum is a natural, witty storyteller and a keen observer of small details. An evening with Colum is a breath of fresh air as he tells his fascinating, frequently  humorous tales about real people in a real world in his natural, effortless style and with that ‘oh so wonderful’ lilting accent. Combine this with his huge talent as a lyricist and his not inconsiderable skill in writing some wonderful  melodies and then add his rich, warm vocals and you will see that a first rate evening awaits you.

Colum Sands is not often in the south of England and we have waited a long time to get him at the club. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to see him in an intimate setting in the south!

Recently the creative juices have been working overtime and songs have been erupting from the inspirational area of his brain at an alarming rate (amazing what retirement from the day job can do!), so be prepared to hear many delightful new songs tonight.

Brian also performs in a duo with Jeff Henry and his last appearance at our club was in this format, when they presented the song suite they've put together entitled 'Southampton in Song'. If you haven't already purchased it, the CD is well recommended, and would make a unique and charming gift for any Southampton resident.

VIN GARBUTT

Be prepared for an evening with a difference as the legend that is Vin Garbutt takes your emotions on a roller coaster ride through the dales and vales of Garbuttland. A box of tissues is a must at a Garbutt gig for he'll have you weeping huge tears of sadness at his massively moving, poignant and heart-wrenching songs, some on subjects no lesser being would dare to tackle. But then, just as you're reaching for the razor blades, he'll lift you back up and you'll need those tissues again as you roll in the aisles with side-splitting laughter at his hilarious stories and introductions. It is no wonder then that Vin Garbutt was voted BBC Radio 2's 'Best Live Folk Act', a plaudit he richly deserves.

RON TRUEMAN-BORDER

Ron Trueman-Border has gained an enviable reputation as one of the folk and acoustic scene’s most popular singer/songwriters. Perhaps it is because he writes such accessible choruses, so enthusiastically received by his audiences, that everyone feels an empathy with the lyrics. Many musicians, having heard his songs, are covering them and have progressed to recording them too.

It has been said by many that Ron is a gifted writer but he is also an extremely talented guitarist, multi-instrumentalist and accomplished singer able to convey a sense of fun one minute and sheer emotion the next.

HARVEY ANDREWS

A concert headlined by Harvey Andrews is more than just a guaranteed, highly enjoyable evening - it is an amazing experience. For Harvey is not just a wonderful singer & guitarist but is also a fascinating, and frequently hilarious, story-teller and, arguably, the UK’s best songwriter. Drawing from life’s rich tapestry and covering a whole range of subjects from the thought-provoking to the hugely amusing, Harvey delivers all with a wonderful clarity of voice which is so seldom heard these days.

No stranger to the media, he has appeared on over 50 TV shows including the ‘Old Grey Whistle Test’, and has also been broadcast on radio, including three times on the Peel Sessions. Indeed he has also hosted ‘Folk on Two’ and a ‘Kaleidoscope’ special was devoted to his work. He also wrote and sang the theme songs for the TV series ‘Golden Pennies’ and ‘The Haunted School’ and sang the theme song in the British movie ‘Psychomania’.

A true master of the written and spoken word, one of his song lyrics was used in course work for the English Language GCSE exam and another was included in the Oxford University Book of English Traditional Verse. Indeed, many of the songs of this prolific songwriter (15 albums of self-penned material!) have been ‘covered’ by other artists, ranging from Mary Hopkin to Christy Moore. His own recordings have featured artists such as Martin Carthy, Ralph McTell, Richard Thompson, Rick Wakeman, Danny Thompson and Dave Pegg.

Since 1966 when, at the age of 23, Harvey left teaching to embark on a full-time musical career, he has performed at most major festivals (5 times at Cambridge) and has toured extensively both nationally and internationally. So, don’t miss this opportunity to see him at a local venue - he appears in the south far too rarely nowadays.

George King & Priory Hard

CD Launch Night
"King Sings with Priory Hard"

Priory Hard are George King, Rosie Marshall, Phil Wrigglesworth and John Connell, four people who love to sing, and they sing for charity (if you feed them!). Over the years the group has changed a great deal, both in number and name. Their material has also altered with the ravages of time. They started out in life as the Priory Hard Shanty Crew with nearly a dozen singers. Now they are just four.

They have sung on tall ships, in shopping malls, in pubs and clubs. They have even been known to sing some traditional songs for a change.

They’ve spent a few nights on the Lord Nelson at the International Festival of the Sea, singing all around the dockyard, enjoying the atmosphere of the festival and singing live on Radio Solent from the deck of the Nelson. They certainly do enjoy singing – anywhere and anytime!

George has been singing for many a decade and, although now in his eighties, still has a much-admired, fertile, well-rounded voice with a certain ringing quality. Phil has a very rich, hearty voice and, like George, has sung with Priory Hard since its inception. Stalwart Rosie, the last surviving female in the group (all the others have drifted away for various reasons), has a good collection of songs, including some very funny ones. John also has a wealth of songs and has been singing for many years (and dancing too – with King John’s Morris and as one-time organiser of M27 Megabops). Although the newest member of the quartet, he still has a not inconsiderable number of performances with Priory Hard under his belt.

As a group they will go out and sing in the pub or park - or anywhere that will help raise some cash for your charity. Ask them to sing and they will!!

Tonight George King and Priory Hard are also launching their new CD “King Sings with Priory Hard”.

'ZIMMERMEN'
(George Wilson & Jeff Henry)

The rest, as they say, is history, and you too can have the undoubted pleasure of sharing in that experience, as Zimmermen present a tribute to Bob Dylan.

BARRY WAKE & FRIENDS

Barry Wake is an acclaimed singer/songwriter/guitarist (and banjoist!) who’s been writing songs generally in the folk idiom and in his words “inflicting them on innocent folk club audiences for twenty years or so”. He came across the Woolston Folk Club in 1987, and has been a member and supporter ever since.

Barry’s musical CV, mainly in the Southern Area, is far too extensive to list here, but includes numerous dance, song and festival incarnations, both solo and with friends. Barry will be inviting a few friends to join him this evening. Come and support one of the best songwriters around.
